History

The oldest known festive gathering of “Gentlemen educated at Ashford School” was held at the Saracen’s Head Hotel on the 20th August 1776 when "Dinner was on the table at Two o’clock".

The above type of meal was the forerunner of The Old Ashfordians Association, which was founded in 1899 as the alumni for the then Ashford Grammar School, now The Norton Knatchbull Academy.

No school history could possibly ignore its former pupils, and many former pupils prior to our inception expressed a desire that an annual meeting and school feast should take place to effect an alumni.

Many different events have taken place throughout our history, some of which still take place today. Cricket matches, dinners, social events. The most interesting was a “Smoking Concert”, which included a long series of toasts, recitation and musical items. At the end of the evening, a tambourine was passed around and the sum of four guineas (£4.20) was collected for the wives and children of those at the South Africa War.
